Die Stimmung
Ressource: Zeichentrickfilm
Watch the film clip. Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences - language is not important) about your feelings or gut reaction to the clip. Write down five nouns and five adjectives in your native language that describe the mood. Did the mood of the movie help you decipher the meaning of the missing words? Write down your newly gained understanding. Share with a partner: Are you missing the same words? Can you help each other? Are the missing words important? Can you tell if they are nouns, verbs, adjectives or something else? Gather as much information as you can. |

Deine Gedanken
On this page you have seen a very diverse group of interpreters of this German classical poem.
You can see or hear works of artists from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Russia, The United States, China, Japan, Korea.
Why do you think all those people are fascinated and inspired by this over 200 year old poem?
What in this story speaks to people all over the world through the centuries?
Write a short paragraph explaining the attraction.
Is it the story? The mood? The fairy tale components? The nightmare? The fact that there is no happy ending (shock value)? Something else?
Bonus: Are you aware of another poem that has such international fame? What is the theme? Who is the poet?
Write a short paragraph summarizing that other poem and naming at least three international interpretations.

Theater Arts
1. Learn the poem by heart and perform it in front of the class. Your German must be perfect.
2. Record yourself interpreting the poem. You will need to use different inflection for the different persons, gestures and facial expressions. You also need to handle the technology part. However, you may look at the text (but it cannot show in the video clip). 3. Perform the poem with a group of four as a skit (the narrator can do the filming). Use guidelines for (2) for both live or recorded performance. 4. Make a puppet show with a partner or two. You can give a live performance or make a video. Use Goethe's poem or write your own German version. Resources: Beispiele | Visual Arts
1. Paint a watercolor or oil painting of a scene from the poem with at least three characters. The rendition must be clearly identifiable. No abstracts, please!
2. Turn Goethe's poem into a comic strip, at least one picture per verse. Hand-write the poem under the correct image. You can also write a parody and illustrate it with a partner. 3. Make story boards for the poem that would cue a person who is reciting the poem. One board per verse. 4. Animate the Erlkönig. You may use Goethe's poem, your parody, or modernized version. 5. Make a video of a native speaker. Find a relative or family friend of German-speaking origin and ask them to recite (or read) the poem. Resources: Beispiele |
Music1. Find sheet music of the song by your favorite composer for an instrument that you have mastered. Perform in front of the class or record yourself with a video camera.
2. Find sheet music of the song by your favorite composer in your register. Perform with or without accompaniment in front of your class or record yourself with a video camera. 3. Compose a new melody to Goethe's poem. The lyrics should fit the melody. Perform or record your masterpiece. 4. Compose an instrumental piece for at least four instruments (e.g. strings). The lyrics do not need to match the music, but the atmosphere should be reflected and the personae should be identifiable. 1. Translate the poem into another language - English, Spanish, French or ASL. Careful, I WILL check for plagiarism, and I will use vast resources. A good translation does not sound like a translation, yet must be accurate. At the same time it must reflect the atmosphere and emotions correctly.
2. Write a parody. Yes, in German. 3. Rewrite the story in a different literary form, such as a short story, an interview with the parents and doctor, a letter written by the parents or a sibling of the little boy, or a newspaper article. Yes, in German. 4. Write a modernized or in some form alternate version (change the setting, the characters and/or the time). 5. Interpret the poem. First, write a summary, then analyze the characters. Next, you look at the rhyming pattern and the rhetorical devices. Finish by giving the historic background and information on the poet, then drawing conclusions.
